Case StudyŚ sanitation for schools

Shree Kakling Higher Secondary School Toilets, Doramba in Ramechhap.

This was our first school toilet project in 2007.

If a school does not have toilets then open ground is the only option, which creates disease.
During our first visit to Nepal we were invited to visit Doramba. Joining the 6 a.m. bus from Kathmandu we travelled for six hours to the local bus stop in the middle of nowhere. Then we walked uphill for six hours till it got dark. We stayed in someone’s wooden house at the top of the 3,000 meter hill. We were very grateful for the only accommodation, but the fire was very smoky. A night time visit to the local bush toilet gave me my first experience of the Himalayan skyline. Another six hours downhill to Doramba.
We had the most amazing welcome at the school, so after volleyball and races we were presented with a wish-list from the local school, which included toilets. The photo above shows them being built. Thanks to Dan Ghising for taking us to meet his family and everyone else in the village.

Resolve International has helped three schools to build toilets and renovated toilets at another school.
One school girl commented: 'we no longer have to worry about people watching us when we go to the toilet'.
